Resolution

If you are experiencing error messages, or the software you are using doesn't function properly, you have the ability to perform a System Restore. A System Restore can quickly solve problems with your software or operating system. Before running the System Restore you should uninstall any software or hardware that has been recently installed to see if that eliminates your problem. If the problem still exists, please follow the steps below.

System Restore of a previously created USER Backup or the FACTORY backup

You must understand that after performing a system restore, your PC will change back to the factory settings that were in place when you received your new PC.
If you have any critical data that cannot be lost please back it up before going any further.

If your problem is so severe that your system will only display error messages and not allow you into Windows, go to step 2 below.

If you can still get to the Windows desktop, start at step 1 below.

  1. Open the Tech in a Box application , 
    If you have Windows XP or ME, click the System Restore button. Follow all directions to restore your system. More help with XP System Restore
    If you have Windows 98, click the Second Chance button. Follow all directions to restore your system.

    If your problems persist, Open the Tech In A Box application again, and click the Restore Backup button. This will give you the choice of restoring a User Backup (provided you made one)
    If for any reason the Restore Backup process does not solve your problem, click the Restore Original Factory Backup button.
    This selection will completely replace the data on your system with a factory fresh hard drive image. To perform this step, after clicking the Restore Original Factory Backup button, go to step 11 below.

  3. Locate the disc labeled Advanced Recovery, Diagnostic Tools and place it into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
  4. Note: You may see a screen telling you about the driver CD. If you do, wait until you see the exit button show up,
    and click the exit button to return to the desktop.

  5. Reboot your PC at this point by clicking the Start button in the lower left-hand corner of your desktop
  6. Click shutdown or Turn Off
  7. Click Restart
  8. Click OK - your system will now restart
  9. A blue text screen should appear with three boxes containing the letters R, F, and D. across the bottom of the screen.
    Note: If you do not see this screen please contact Technical Support
  10. Press the F key on the keyboard to run the Factory System Restore. 
  11. You will see a screen titled Drive Image Special Edition. There will be two large icons labeled Restore Backup and Restore Factory Backup.
  12. Click the Restore Backup icon. You should see a window titled Restore User Backup Warning. This message is to inform you that the process has started.
    Note: If you receive a message Unable to complete operation, The image file was not found, this message explains that no User Backup was ever created. You will see this message if a User Backup was never created, or if the system for some reason cannot find a User Backup file. To continue Restoring back to the factory settings Click OK and select Restore Factory Backup.
  13. You should see a Warning explaining that you are about to destroy all personal files. This process will remove all personal files and settings and will also remove any possible errors.
  14. To continue with the Restore Factory Setting type the letters Y E S as the instructions indicate. Then click OK
  15. You will see a message that says System Restore in progress ??.. Please do not interrupt this operation or turn off your computer.
  16. This process can take 30 minutes or more to complete.

    You should have a message on your screen saying that The operation completed successfully.  

    Congratulations on restoring your PC!

    If used the Recovery disc, you will need to eject it from your drive. After you have done so, press the OK button. Your PC will automatically restart. You may see messages that your system is installing software for devices it is finding. Just press finish to continue past this point. You will then receive the message asking if you would like to create a user backup of your system. Choose no at this time.

    Now, while you are at your PC's desktop, insert the Advanced Recovery, Diagnostic Tools CD again and wait for the second screen to appear. When this screen appears, press the Install Drivers button. The system will load your drivers automatically. When this step is completed, you will get a message asking if you would like to restart the PC. Choose Yes and remember to remove the CD as the PC restarts.

    At this time, your PC has been completely restored and all drivers loaded. Take your time to verify that the problem you were experiencing has gone away. Remember this process is available to you at any time you have problems.
